One reason is that once you totally understand C# syntax and object-oriented concepts, the transition to building some other applications is unbelievably easy. The second is that this will seriously effect your design decisions later on. The best teams I've ever worked with understand object-oriented design very well and this knowledge propels the team into easily adapting to any new technologies whether that means designing a brand new enterprise application from scratch or learning a new version of the .NET Framework with all of its new advancements. Anyone would be hard-pressed to find a .NET Architect who did not know the basics like the back of their hand.
